How do you keep your house clean every day, so that you don’t have to spend all weekend cleaning it? The trick is to simply clean a little bit every day so that big messes don’t pile up. Once you have established the habit of tidying every day, you won’t have to spend so much time every week trying to keep it under control.
These things do not add up to a complete house cleaning, but once you have gotten into the habit of tending to your home a little every day, you probably won’t have to intensely clean every week. You don’t have to do everything yourself either. Get your kids into the habit of tidying every day too, and they will become adults who know how to keep a clean house.
Here are ten things that should be done every day:
1. Make Your Bed
An unmade bed makes the entire room look messy, as the bed is the bedroom’s most visible surface. If constantly tucking in sheets is too much for you, you can switch to using a duvet with a removable cover that can be washed weekly. That way you simply have to pull it up to make the bed. Having a tidy bed each day can change your life.
2. Empty the Dishwasher Every Morning
It only takes five minutes to put away every dish in a clean dishwasher, even if it is packed. It is easy to do this while waiting for the coffee to brew or while the kids are getting ready for school. Having an empty dishwasher prevents dirty dishes from piling up in the sink, making the kitchen look much tidier. It also helps prevent pests, if you needed any more motivation.
3. Clean Up After Every Meal and Snack
Every time you eat a meal or snack, load the dirty dishes into the dishwasher and wipe your counters with an all-purpose cleaner. Kitchens with dirty countertops look awful, so this habit will help contribute to a tidier look.
4. Do a Load of Laundry Every Day
It is extremely helpful to develop a daily laundry habit. Before heading to work, put a load into the washer. When you get home, move it to the dryer. As soon as the dryer is done running, fold the clothes and put them away. If you can’t figure out what to wash, use a sorting laundry hamper and go for the one with the most clothes in it.
5. Wipe the Sinks and Faucets

6. Sort and Recycle Paper Immediately
Dealing with the mail as soon as you walk in the door will help to keep paper and bills from piling up. Run junk mail through the paper shredder and put bills and letters in a mail sorter to be dealt with on bill-paying day.
7. Use Floor Mats
Put a floor mat on both the inside and outside of each door that leads to the outdoors. This will help to keep dirt from being tracked into the house. Every few days, vacuum the mats or shake them outside.
8. Tidy Countertops Before Bed
Before you go to bed, do a quick check of the kitchen and put away any clutter that might be there. Put away your toiletries and jewelry in the bathroom as well. Don’t let the dining room table turn into a clutter spot either – keep it tidy.
9. Keep the Carpet Clean
High-traffic areas should be vacuumed every other day, but you may not have enough time to do it that often. Pick up small messes (such as cat hair and paper scraps) between vacuuming times and your carpet will look much better. When it comes to carpet, it pays to be picky.
10. Sweep the Kitchen
It can be a hassle to use a broom and dustpan, so run a multi-surface sweeper over the kitchen floor every night. This is so easy to do that your kids can do it.
If you use these tips for keeping a clean house, it will only take a few minutes a day, but your home will always look clean, even when life gets busy.
